What to do with those drugs...

Yeah, yeah, joke if you must, but unused prescription drugs are a hazard.  You should never keep unused prescription meds around (even if you think "Oh, I might want those painkillers later").  It's not worth the risk of an accidental poisoning or overdose.  The problem is, what to do with them.  You shouldn't flush them because that just leads to meds in our water system.  And you shouldn't just toss them because animals (or other humans) could dig them out of the trash and ingest them.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy recommends that you refer to printed material accompanying the medication for specific instructions. Most prescription drugs should be mixed with an undesirable substance (such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter) and put in impermeable, non-descript containers (such as empty cans or sealable bags) before discarding them in the trash.

On September 25, DEA will coordinate a collaborative effort with state and local law enforcement agencies to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets.  This includes outdated or expired or unused prescription and non-prescription medicines.  To find a drop off location near you, go to http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/takeback/
