A friend of mine asked recently what green changes we had all made this year. Most of my eco-transgressions are in the personal care department. I'm not a very girly girl, I don't dress up much and I am sensitive to fragrances so I have no good reason for the amount of personal care products I still use. In 2010 I did manage to make 3 changes for the better in that department:
1. I switched to LunaPads. I still haven't given up tampons and for the most part tampons are what gets me through my monthly period. At night, however I have always used pads. Two months ago I coughed up the cash and bought a set of Lunapads. I'm still getting used to exactly how they work best for me but I am finding them very comfortable and easy to use. Lunapads can be purchased here. Use the code LUNA10 and save $5 off an order of $25! Using reusable Lunapads rather than disposable pads keeps one more bit of trash out of the landfills.
2. I gave up conditioner. I'll admit it: I'm vain about my hair. Earlier this year I was still using Aveda shampoo and conditioner. Their products are lovely but expensive. When I ran out I switched back to Giovanni Organics. Since I use a couple of styling products (to moisturize and protect) and a flat iron on my hair I wondered what would happen if I stopped using conditioner. Guess what? NOTHING! My hair is still healthy and happy without it. So as son as the conditioner was used up I jut didn' replace it. Voila--one less product in the bathroom. Giving up conditioner keeps that out of the water supply and also keeps the packaging out of the recycling system.
3. I gave up nasal steroids antihistamines and decongestants. As most of you know, a few months ago I had nasal surgery. Prior to surgery I had been using a daily nasal steroid and occasional decongestants and antihistamines. Post-surgery I find I don't need any of those. Giving up these medications keeps them out of my body and out of the water supply. It also limits the packaging that gets put into the recycling systems and landfill.
So tell me--what green changes did you make this year?
